Review
"Maybe life is about the journey and not about the destination. That is the moral put forth in Jason and the Argonauts . . .The thing that sets Jason apart from so many other Greek heroes is that he is not a demi-god, or a child born of a god and a human. Jason is fully man, yet he manages to rally some of Greece's greatest heroes to his side (including the mighty Hercules/Heracles) for a quest that is set up to be a suicide mission at best. Jason is at times foolish and at others he is extremely clever (like when he has to outsmart some indestructible zombies- yeah, it's really in the book!). The story moves at a good pace, and loose ends tie up nicely making it feel complete. . . . an enjoyable read and goes along well with(Campfire's) Labors of Heracles graphic novel." -- John Tompkins, Children's Librarian/Graphic Novel Specialist

Triumph and Tragedy...
By HMS Warspite
The Greek myth of Jason, the Argonauts, and the Golden Fleece get the graphic novel treatment courtesy of Campfire Books, author Dan Whitehead, and illustrator Sanikha Banerjee. Jason and his companions will complete a great quest so that Jason may take control of the kingdom that is his birthright. However, Jason will learn, like any good Greek hero, that everything in life has a price...

The story begins with the young Jason returning to Iolcus, the land of his birth, to assert his right to the throne. Jason is favored by the Gods, but as a mere mortal, he makes mistakes, including giving his adversary King Pelias an excuse to send him out on a seemingly impossible quest, to seize the Golden Fleece from a distant land and bring it back to Iolcus. Nothing daunted, Jason undertakes the quest, accompanied by a band of heroes including Hercules, Orpheus, and the sons of Boreas the North Wind. They sail in the custom-built ship the Argo.

Jason and his companions will overcome many obstacles and survive many trials on the way to the Golden Fleece. Jason himself grows into the role of a leader, assisted by some gods who favor his quest. He will also be aided by the sorceress Medea, to whom he makes a pledge of eternal love. Jason and his companions will find the fleece, and he will return a hero, but his personal flaws will also follow him home.

This account of Jason and the Argonauts follows traditional interpretations of the hero and his fate, which may seem harsh unless considered in the totality of his actions. Highly recommended as a good adventure and a complex moral teaching.

You won't be fleeced!

This is ab abridged version of the complete review as it appears (http://ianwoodnovellum.blogspot.com/2015/04/jason-and-argonauts-by-dan-whitehead.html) at my blog dedicated to reading, writing (no 'rithmatic!), movies, & TV.

Everyone knows the story of Jason, his argonauts, and the quest for the Golden Fleece - of if they don't, they really should! It was the topic of a 1963 movie with animation supplied by none other than Ray Harryhausen. It's very dated now, but it was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. The story was re-told in a 2000 TV mini-series, which was closer to the original myth than was the movie.

I was quite excited to see it in a graphic novel which is well-written, colorfully illustrated, and tells a faithful story as far as is possible in this format. Jason recklessly goes to demand his birthright, which is the kingship of Iolcus. Pelias was warned that a man with one shoe would show up who would be a real and present danger as they say, and Jason lost one of his sandals when he swam across the river with an old woman in tow. Not that old women ever really are old women in these kinds of stories.

Pelias sends Jason on an impossible quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece from Colchis, upon delivery of which Pelias will step down. Jason accepts this offer. He starts recruiting a sailing crew, and he hires a master ship-builder, Argus, to create the fastest and strongest ship. Pelias evidently pays for all of this. Zeus's long-suffering wife Hera decides to back Jason's gambit and aids him along the way.

Jason's crew was famous in Greece back then: Atalanta the virgin huntress, Calais and Zetes who are the sons of Boreas - the North Wind - and who are known as the Boreads, and who can fly, Castor and Pollux, who were actually not twins but stepbrothers (they had different fathers) and were known as the Dioskouri, Euphemus, who could rwalk on water long before anyone from Galilee ever did, Heracles more commonly know as Hercules, Orpheus the legendary musician, Peleus, aka Telemon, and not to be confused with Pelias, who was the son of Aeacus, king of the island of Aegina, where I've actually vacationed, and Philoctetes, the famed archer. We're told in the book that Polydeuces the Olympic champion volunteered, but Polydeuces is just another name for Pollux.

The crew sets sail for Salmydessus to learn from the blind man Phineaus the route to the fleece, but they run short of food and are forced to find land to refill their bread baskets. They come across an island populated only by women. No, it's not Themyscira, it's Lemnos, where the women (we learn) killed off all the men in an act of savagery born of unfaithfulness on the part of said men. The argonauts quickly fall under the spell of the women and it's only Herakles who finally stirs them to get away from their enchantment.

The story doesn't have a happy ending. It's a Greek myth remember, not a children's fairy tale! But to learn exactly how Jason gets his fleece, and what becomes of him and the Argonauts afterwards, I'll leave that for you to discover. Don't think you know what's going to happen if you've only ever seen the 1963 movie! Note also that there are several graphic novels out there which tell this story. I've read only one of them; others may tell it differently and may be better or worse than this one. This one is a fast read and I really liked it, but it's a bit gory and rampant, so understand that it's not a tale for young children.

Sit around the Campfire and enjoy a great read!
By Mary Fortner Smith
Campfire Comics are some of the best comics for young minds, that are written to arouse curiosity, inspire and stimulate minds to search the world around us and research tales of great deeds of unforgettable people. The comics/graphic novels are written and illustrated to recount stories of human values, in the hopes of widening the minds creative scope and interests.
What I stated above is the Campfire Comics Mission Statement.
Although their books are geared towards young minds, I have also found them to be entertaining and enjoyable, even for a 50 something woman such as myself.
I'm adding a listing of a variety of Campfires graphic novels to give you an idea of what they have to offer. Campfire also offers their own comic creations besides classics, biography, history and more.
