Transitions: A Nurse's Education about Life and Death, by Becki Hawkins

Transitions: A Nurse's Education about Life and Death is a collection of stories from Becki Hawkins's patients over the past thirty years of her career. She started off as a nurse's aide, became a registered nurse, and began her career in oncology. A couple of years later she also started seeing hospice patients. She also did outpatient oncology nursing, home health/hospice, became a hospice chaplain, and later a hospice volunteer. She now sees patients on a volunteer basis. She began writing a feature column, "Beyond Statistics," for a local newspaper when her husband told her one evening after her shift at work, "Please don't tell me about it. Write it down." The first article was published in 1986. These stories are the patients' stories and their education to Becki as she visited them about the transitions we make in life and in death. Some of them involve patients in the nursing home, others in the hospital or an outpatient setting, and many others in the patients' homes. Some of the patients were strangers, some were friends, some acquaintances, and some were family. You will find humor, heartbreak, wisdom, and frequent spiritual allusions in Transitions. The author reminds us that life is brief and fragile, and laced with story after story of how each of us is "learning" in this place that one patient named "Earth School."

Amazing Stories, Beautifully Told - A Must Read
By F. Daniel Endy
Becki Hawkins has an incredible way with words. Her writing style is so comfortable and genuine that you quickly feel like she is a dear friend. Most of the stories are told in a journalistic style, as an observer relating the experience as directly as possible. Each chapter is only 2 or 3 pages long, yet the reader can envision the entire life story that accompanies of these heartfelt glimpses of lives in transition.

The book is separated into 3 sections. The first is called the Early Years. It covers Becki's initial acclimation to the world of nursing and her many challenges and lessons learned. The second section is called Hospice Gifts. These stories are so incredibly beautiful. With an absolute minimum of words, Becki conveys a wealth of depth. The third section is called Family where she writes about transition experiences with family members.

Becki's caring shines through in every story, often simply in the words she choses and the loving way she tells each story. This is a truly amazingly wonderful book.

I can be a picky S.O.B. And I believe it's better to tell the truth than to sugar coat it. You'll have to trust me on that. But when I give high praise, it means something.

A close relative of mine is experiencing a real tough patch right now. They just entered hospice care. I don't think I need any extra help dealing with it, but I can tell you this book has made a very positive difference for me in many ways.

Another reviewer on Goodreads gave this book 1 star and said she couldn't finish it because she felt it was syrupy and overly religious in tone. I strongly disagree. Becki Hawkins shows respect for all approaches to death, both religious and non-religious. If you feel compassionate caring is syrupy, you may not like this book either. If you can't stand to hear a few words as a person expresses their religious views when they are nearing death's door, you may not like this book either. But if you appreciate excellent writing and heartfelt stories told in a natural and loving style that makes each one as comforting as a warm mother's hug, this is your book. And be prepared to shed a few tears along the way.

This book is truly excellent.

Nurse Conquers Attack Geese, Copperheads, Sceptics
By Steve Woodall
Becki Hawkins, a hospice nurse and a chaplain, has given us a collection of moving stories in the voices of rural Oklahomans facing death. She has also given us a perspective of hope and confidence in human generosity, courage and compassion. Ms. Hawkins' stories were originally published as a column for a local newspaper.

One easily imagines these stories emerging as something of a therapeutic journal at the end of a day's pilgrimage through farm country: fording creeks, fending off attack geese and copperheads one minute, sceptical patients and family members the next. Ms. Hawkins' training and her own nature (I do know her personally, and so will you, if you read this book) helped me see that a chaplain's greatest gift to the dying and the survivors often lies simply in helping to create the space for grief to do its work. One of the best stories ends with her sitting down in a kitchen and folding laundry with the overwhelmed wife of a patient.

These stories resist the temptation to dwell on the macabre and the messiness of caring for sick and incapacitated patients, providing a respectful close-up look at living rooms that have been turned into sick rooms, complete with beside toilets, IVs, tables full of syringes and other accoutrements of nursing care. The stories are not those of a clinician but of patients and their families as they begin the ultimate transition: making peace with one another, their infirmities and the inevitable end of this life.

Ms. Hawkins writes in the vernacular of the people she serves. Her stories reveal a great comfort with common people of modest means. Her descriptive talent draws the reader into these people's homes and lives with great, yet light-hearted sensitivity.

Readers who have experience with hospice, with the death of loved ones, or with their own impending death will find many of these stories familiar and comforting. Those who've not travelled that road yet, will gain insight from these stories that will be useful, sooner or later. The stories will leave you with a great appreciation for those men and women who are somehow called to nursing and ministry as their life's work.

The Sorry Saga of the Brewster Buffalo: A Flying Coffin to the U.S. Marines, but a Pearl to the Finns, by Daniel Ford

A group of Internet aviation fans once debated the subject of the worst fighter of World War II. Their hands-down favorite: the Brewster Buffalo.

Two books are titled 'The World’s Worst Aircraft'. The Buffalo is the only fighter from any era to have a chapter in both of them.

The Royal Air Force fobbed the Brewster fighter onto the Fleet Air Arm and colonial squadrons; the U.S. Navy gave it to the Marines. Pilots thought it was a sweet plane to fly, but noticed that the wheel struts sometimes broke, the engine leaked oil, and the guns sometimes didn’t fire. And when they flew it against the nimble fighters of Japan, too often they didn’t come back.

Yet all the while, the Finns tore great holes through the Russian air force with essentially the same plane.

In this short book, Daniel Ford tells the story of the bumbling Brewster Aeronautical company of Queens, New York, which struggled to produce a few hundred copies of its roly-poly warplane before it was finally seized by the government and used to build a competing fighter. About 8000 words. Photographs.

Superb story and update
By G. Bruce Greer
I first read Dan Ford's article when it was printed in Air and Space, and enjoyed his strong compare and constrast history of the Buffalo. Much maligned in aviation histories, often cited as the worst aircraft of WW2 and yet a superb success in the hands of the Finns, compiling several records, including a kill rate of 135-0 in its first six months of operations in their hands, and an overall kill rate of 30.6 to one in action against increasingly improved planes in the hands of the Russians, all the while cut of from their sources of parts and supplies for the plane. In this e-book edition, Mr Ford has updated and enhanced his original work. He also maintains a superb website for those interested in learning more about the plane and its history with the RAF, the USN, USMC, Dutch, RAAF, RNZAF and of course, the Finns.
Like Mr. Ford, I have found this mixed result interesting, especially when you consider the Navy picked the Buffalo (F2A) over its replacement, the F4F.
For those interested in other related fields, he has written, and updated a magnificent history of the Flying Tigers, which is well worth reading!

A interesting quick read
By brian vaccher
A poor title the poor buffalo did better than the author would let you know. it's biggest failure was it's manufacter and the poor support it recieved from them. A deeper look will tell you that the Brits and Aussies did much better than what is told over Burma
and Malayasia. As for the Marine use at Midway it was inexpierenced pilots and poor tactics that led to the poor outcome.
In many ways the Buffalo performed as well as the F4F Wildcat. At this time Marine pilots were expected to be able to fly all type of aircraft and were rotated thru bombing and scouting squadrons The real cadre of fighter pilots were very small. Compared to the Finns use with highly expeienced pilots and the astounding kill ratio they achieved with a not very differnt airframe. It's really about pilot skill and tactics that can carry the day.

A short not particularly interesting book
By creedmore1000
Yes indeed this is a short, not particularly interesting book. Okay, I remember the Brewster Buffalo from my youth. While not nearly old enough to participate in WWII, living on the Southern Flyway we boys were able to see nearly every type of military aircraft in use by our forces. Buffalos no doubt flew over our family home though well before my interest had been aroused in aircraft spotting. Thus it was already considered obsolete by Pearl Harbor. Many had been turned over to GB for the defense of Singapore and . Thus little in this book was news to me though I did enjoy it as a review.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Equal parts short fiction collection and candid retrospective, this second and concluding volume of Martin's shelf-bending compendium highlights a wide variety of his later work, including two stories set in the shared, superhero-laden universe of Wild Cards; The Hedge Knight, a prequel to the epic Song of Ice and Fire fantasy saga (A Game of Thrones, etc.); and Doorways, an action-packed, exceptionally plotted pilot script for a science fiction television series that never aired. Other notable selections include Portraits of His Children, the Nebula-winning story of a self-absorbed writer forced to come face-to-face with the consequences of his own heartlessness, and two outstanding cautionary tales featuring space-faring ecological engineer and savvy opportunist Haviland Tuf. Science fiction, fantasy and horror fans alike will be blown away by the diversity and quality of stories as well as by Martin's extensive and frank commentary about his life and experiences in the publishing and television industries, backed up by a 24-page bibliography. Both physically and thematically immense, this extraordinary collection is one to cherish. (Dec.)

About the Author
George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally since then. He spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer-producer, working on The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid '90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Whenever he's allowed to leave, he returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives with the lovely Parris, a big white dog called Mischa, and two cats named Augustus and Caligula, who think they run the place.

"Dreamsongs Volume II" (From BookBanter)
By Alex C. Telander
In this second and final volume of George R. R. Martin's short works, readers are treated to his writings of the 1980's leading up to the 90s when his career took off with the eventual success of his Song of Ice and Fire series. It is in this collection that we learn more of Martin's dabbling into television and screenwriting, as well his exploits into the world of Dungeons & Dragons.

Divided into four parts, the first covers two stories involving Martin's eccentric character Haviland Tuf, an animal seller, who is the last surviving member of the ancient and defunct Ecological Group. Tuf with his menagerie travel the universe in The Ark, a ship that is many miles in length. All stories involving Tuf were eventually collected and published in a book, Tuf Voyaging, which Martin recommends fans seek out to read more about the redoubtable Tuf, but they must seek the used and out-of-print stores to find a copy.

The second part covers Martin's trip into screenwriting, specifically for TV shows. Two shows that Martin worked on were the 1980s incarnation of The Twilight Zone and Beauty and the Beast. Scripts for two episodes of The Twilight Zone: "The Road Less Traveled," and "Doorways" are included here. While this was essentially the end for Martin's involvement in TV, he is quick to point out that he learned greatly from it. It was just one of the stepping stones that led to the creation of his epic fantasy series, still some years away.

In the third section, Martin discusses the surprising success of the Wild Cards series, which began with role-playing games amongst a group of writers - including Martin - when he moved to Santa Fe. The worlds, ideas and set-ups created for the different games were the impetus for the Wild Cards series which is still doing very well and now has its own website at [...]

In the fourth and final part, Martin leads up to the start of his epic series with some popular stories along the way, as well as including the novella The Hedge Knight set ten years before the start of the series. And for those hardcore fans, at the end there is an exhaustive and comprehensive listing of all George R. R. Martin's works, should one feel the compunction to read absolutely everything the man has ever written.

While the completion and release date for the fifth Song of Ice and Fire book, A Dance With Dragons, is still a distant and unknown destination, the Dreamsongs series can lead one on tangents into Martin's other writings, eventually bringing them full circle when A Dance With Dragons is eventually released.

A middling experience
By I like stuff
What to say about Dreamsongs: Volume II? While it did have some solid entries ("The Hedge Knight" [hampered by some boring jousting but ultimately enjoyable], the Wild Cards stories, and both of the Haviland Tuf tales) it felt weaker than the first volume overall. Particularly forgettable were Part Seven: The Siren Song of Hollywood (containing two scripts he had penned for television shows) and a number of stories from Part Nine: The Heart in Conflict ("Portraits of his Children" and "Unsound Variations" being perhaps the weakest stories of the whole collection with the exception of Volume I Part One: A Four-Color Fanboy). While I'm sure all the stories were selected carefully for particular reasons, I still wonder if there were better selections from Martin's history that could have included.

Should you still read it? Certainly, especially if you've already finished the first volume. Any fan of GRRM would be silly to pass up a collection of his earlier works in their author-preferred forms (the expanded version of "Nightflyers" from the first volume, the first script for "Doorways", and the original version of "A Beast for Norn") and it would serve as an entry point into the extended Martin universe for new fans curious for more after whetting their appetites on ASoIaF.

Both volumes would make good gifts for fantasy-lovers (even some of the sci-fi stories have a heavy fantasy influence, though Martin has an interesting note about genres in Volume II) ranging from teens to adults. Several of the stories have sexual content unsuitable for young children and "The Skin Trade" is a bit too grotesque for the average youngster, but all of the others could potentially be read by a parent. "The Ice Dragon" from Volume I, which is also sold as a separate short book, would be excellent for children.

George R.R. Martin Keeps You Entertained
By Kindle Customer
I'm going to be lazy here, but I will promise that Martin totally transports you into whatever world he creates be it the halls of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL or the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Martin will keep you guessing and engaged. If you fell in love with the characters in "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, you will love this collection. You might even see Tyrion disgused as a mutant in one of these stories.

The images on the cover represent the scope of modern biochemistry, which seeks to characterize the molecules and reactions of life. In all organisms, genetic information—in the form of a sequence of nucleotides in DNA—is selectively expressed, as shown by the lighted spots of the DNA microarray in the background. Genetic information directs the synthesis of proteins. Each protein has a unique shape that can be visualized in three dimensions, as depicted by the blue surface model, and also has a unique metabolic function. For example, the protein shown on the cover is an enzyme whose activity contributes to the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. Biochemists build on their knowledge of molecular structure and function to design compounds that can selectively interact with proteins in order to modulate their behavior. In this example (discussed in Box 10-B on page 280), the drug imatinib is shown as a green shape that fits snugly into the active site of the enzyme, blocking its activity and thereby inhibiting cancer growth.

Appreciating the structures and functions of biological molecules requires more than looking at pictures or reading about them. This book is designed not only to present information but also to help students develop the ability to answer questions, creating opportunities for them to explore and discover all aspects of biochemistry.

The best introductory biochemistry textbook for a 1 semester class
By SM60
Pratt and Cornely have done the almost impossible. They have put together an informative biochemistry textbook that is very well designed and will not overwhelm students in a 1 semester course. The boxed Biochemistry Notes, Problems and Answers, and Clinical Connections are definite pluses, as well as the well thought out end-of-chapter question sets.

I wish the publisher would make the book-related online material available to all those who have purchased a copy of the book. Content on the WileyPlus site appears to be available only to instructors and students registered for a course. Those who bought the book for self-study are out-of-luck. That is unfortunate, as this is an excellent text for self-study.

If you have Lehninger get this too.
By Ben
If you are using Lehninger buy this one too. It's not quite as comprehensive but it's actually possible to make sense of the topics with this book. Lehninger is clearly written by talented scientists but they are not so talented in the teaching and writing aspects of their bussiness. This book is solid on the science and very well written.

46 Beautiful Illustrations based on The Lunar Chronicles – designs printed on one side of the page
By iiiireader
[[VIDEOID:9d642ef7ea1da331acf2e9ca86503cd2]]This is a beautifully illustrated coloring book based on the New York Times Best selling series by Marissa Meyer, “The Lunar Chronicles”. The designs are by a fan artist, Kathryn Gee. For the most part, the designs represent four of the books in the series (“Cinder”, “Scarlett”, “Cress”, and “Winter”) though there is one design from “Stars Above”. The designs wonderfully represent the series which is a great cross of science fiction and fairy tales.

The designs are divided into four sections: The Crew, Allies and Villains, The World of the Lunar Chronicles, and Moments. On the facing page of each design is an excerpt from one of the books or, at the beginning of each section, an interesting note from Ms. Meyer about the process of writing the series.

Each section develops around its theme. In The Crew, there are designs of many characters (and my favorites!), including: Linh Cinder, Emperor Kaito, Iko, Scarlet Benoit, Ze'ev “Wolf” Kesley, Crescent Moon “Cress” Darnel, Captain Carswell Thorne, Princess Winter Hayle-Blackburn, and Sir Jacin Clay. The three other sections have additional characters, locations, and scenes from the book. It's a great representation of the stories for fans of the books.

Additionally, Ms. Meyer tells the fun and interesting story of how the coloring book came to be. I think it is great that Ms. Meyer chose a fan-artist to illustrate the book and the story behind that choice makes the coloring book even more special. There is a special illustration that started the ball rolling on the project. I'll include that one first in the photos that I upload.

The designs are detailed and will be fun to color. They are not so intricate that they will require special nib pens, markers, etc. but each one will provide hours of coloring time.

This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium. I will list, in the comments section below, the coloring medium I used to test this book and which I generally use in my coloring projects.

46 Design Pages with quotes from books printed on back of page

Designs printed on one side of the page

Paper is heavyweight, white, slightly smooth, and perforated

Sewn Binding

You can remove pages from the book at the perforations but I don't plan to do so as it will break the continuity of the story included.

While most designs stop short of the perforations, some designs are printed across the perforations and into the binding area.

Alcohol-based markers bleed through this paper. Rather than remove pages from the book, I use card stock as a blotter when using this medium. It will soak through the design page but the card stock stops it from bleeding through and damaging the page below.

Water-based markers, India ink and gel pens do not bleed through or leave shadows on the back of the page.

Colored Pencils work well with this paper. I tested both oil and wax-base pencils and got good results with both. My tests were for pigment lay down, layering the same color, layering multiple colors, and blending using a pencil style blending stick.

Detailed and fun to look at
By Laura Marshall
I got this for my birthday, and it is one of my favorite gifts. It was clearly thought through. There are four sections, each of them having an introduction as well--The Crew, meaning the nine main good guys--Cinder, Kai, Iko, Scarlet, Wolf, Cress, Thorne, Winter, and Jacin; Allies and Villians, which means bad guys, other good guys, and people that Marissa says are "show-stealers"; The World of the Lunar Chronicles, which are settings; and finally, Moments. That may be my favorite of the sections. It shows Cinder and Kai dancing, Wolf and Scarlet at the farm, Cress's first haircut, a hunched woman offering beautiful princess Winter apple candy, and so on. The pages are smooth and white, perfect for colored pencils. (Not magazine smooth.) The pages are also tear-outs.

The pictures in the coloring book are detailed, so it will take a long time to color and bring to life, but one of the things I like the most is that I immediately recognize the scenes and characters. The girl with long hair is obviously Cress. The large man with scars is Wolf. I recognize the wedding scene and enjoy seeing the grumpy look on Kai's face. It's fun not only to color, but to look at. The story that got the coloring book started is interesting, too. It will take time to color, but in the end, you'll be impressed with yourself and with the artist and author that made it together.

I seriously love this coloring book I got it almost a week ago and I have been coloring like crazy and fangirling the entire time. All of the characters are just as I imagined while reading this amazing series and some of the scenes are amazing as well. There is so much detail and I love every picture of this whole book.

Extreme Alpinism: Climbing Light, Fast, and High, by Mark F., Martin, James Twight

"Big, high routes at the edge of a climber's ability are not the places for inventing technique or relying on old habits. Complacency can lead to fatal errors. So where does the hard-core aspirant or dreamer turn? The only master class in print, Extreme Alpinism delivers an expert dose of reality and practical techniques for advanced climbers.

Focusing on how top alpine climbers approach the world's most difficult routes, Twight centers his instruction on the ethos of climbing the hardest routes with the least amount of gear and the most speed. Throughout, Twight makes it clear that the two things he refuses to compromise are safety and his climbing ethics. In addition to the extensive chapters on advanced techniques and skills, Twight also discusses mental preparedness and attitude; strength and cardiovascular training; good nutrition; and tips on equipment and clothing.

Illustrated throughout with full-color photos. "

The power of the mind
By J. W. Mullins
I am not a climber, so I am certainly not qualified to talk about big portions of this book. I bought this books because it came highly recommended by a couple friend's of mine in the know. The sections about mindset and training are worth the price of this book alone. Mark Twight writes in a clear, concise and no nonsense way. You might not agree with something he says but you can't argue that whatever he presents is logical and well thought out. I recommend this book to anyone who's job, hobby or live style requires extreme amounts of focus and will power to succeed. Its money well spent and you won't regret it.

Best how-to
By A Customer
I wish I had this book when I started to alpine climb over 20 years ago. It would have cut my learning curve in half and saved me from hauling way too much junk up some very big routes!

Also for the not so extreme alpinists...
By K. H. Kikstra
Mark Twight has not written an instruction book filled with clear drawings about how to tie a clove hitch. Beginning climbers looking for basic technique info should buy "Mountaineering: the Freedom of the hills" and go on a course first, but this does not mean that Twight's book is for extreme climbers only.
Any climber that knows these basic techniques benefits from his thoughs and experience. The book is divided in 4 parts:
(1) Approach: about 12 pages about your mental state of mind, very useful for the climber and anyone who wants to achieve specific goals as his thoughts about self-knowledge, focus, confidence, suffering, failure and learning can be applied to a broader range of goals.
(2) Training: this is the first time I have seen a real mountaineering training program in a book like this. He covers a 20 week training cycle in detail, with chapters on mental training, strength, endurance and importantly, nutrition. This really helps set a goal and work towards it. It's impossible to climb any mountain unprepared and unfit and depending on your goal you can adjust his schedule.
(3) Equipment: Clothing, Gear and Potection.
Twight has become (in)famous for refusing the accepted 3 layering system as it's too bulky, warm and heavy. He stresses the lightweight system which was an eye opener for me. Although his thoughts are not applicable for every mountain area (if you wait in Scotland for the rain to stop before climbing, you might as well not come at all...), it helped me to better pack my stuff for my trips: lighter and more useful.
His thoughts about gear are just very useful, learn from the expert, not from someone who is trying to sell the stuff...
(4) Technique:
No it will not teach you to climb a 5.14 at -40 degrees, but it covers things mostly overlooked in other books:
- Staying Alive
- Partners
- Going up
- Bivouacs
- Going down
Especially the latter 2 are things mostly ignored in climbing books (and some courses!), but these are things that also come in handy when lost in a not so extreme environment.
Overall I could not put this book down until I finished it.
The book is filled with experiences, good as well as bad. No drawings, but quite a lot of pictures, some of them useful for understanding the text, some just funny or cool to look at and dream away...
If you own Mountaineering: the Freedom of the Hills and you are not a complete beginner, buy this before you go higher, even if it's not extreme.

Classics of International Relations: Essays in Criticism and AppreciationFrom Routledge

Classics of International Relations introduces, contextualises and assesses 24 of the most important works on international relations of the last 100 years. Providing an indispensable guide for all students of IR theory, from advanced undergraduates to academic specialists, it asks why are these works considered classics? Is their status deserved? Will it endure? It takes as its starting point Norman Angell’s best-selling The Great Illusion (1909) and concludes with Daniel Deudney’s award winning Bounding Power (2006). The volume does not ignore established classics such as Morgenthau’s Politics Among Nations and Waltz’s Theory of International Politics, but seeks to expand the ‘IR canon’ beyond its core realist and liberal texts. It thus considers emerging classics such as Linklater’s critical sociology of moral boundaries, Men and Citizens in the Theory of International Relations, and Enloe’s pioneering gender analysis, Bananas, Beaches and Bases. It also innovatively considers certain ‘alternative format’ classics such as Kubrick’s satire on the nuclear arms race, Dr Strangelove, and Errol Morris’s powerful documentary on war and US foreign policy, The Fog of War. With an international cast of contributors, many of them leading authorities on their subject, Classics of International Relations will become a standard reference for all those wishing to make sense of a rapidly developing and diversifying field.

Classics of International Relations is designed to become a standard reference text for advanced undergraduates, post-graduates and lecturers in the field of IR.

Vienna 1683: Christian Europe Repels the Ottomans (Campaign), by Simon Millar

Osprey's study of a battle that was part of a triple conflict: the Polish-Ottoman War (1683-1699), the Great Turkish War (1667-1698), and the Ottoman Hapsburg Wars (1526-1791). The capture of the Hapsburg city of Vienna was a major strategic aspiration for the Islamic Ottoman Empire, desperate for the control that the city exercised over the Danube and the overland trade routes between southern and northern Europe. In July 1683 Sultan Mehmet IV proclaimed a jihad and the Turkish grand vizier, Kara Mustafa Pasha, laid siege to the city with an army of 150,000 men.

In September a relieving force arrived under Polish command and joined up with the defenders to drive the Turks away. The main focus of this book is the final 15-hour battle for Vienna, which climaxed with a massive charge by three divisions of Polish winged hussars. This hard-won victory marked the beginning of the decline of the Islamic Ottoman Empire, which was never to threaten central Europe again.

Review

“The siege of Vienna is outlined in great detail, with maps, paintings and breakdowns of the various attacks mounted by both sides... The author is a serving army officer with a strong interest in military history, and this interest is reflected through the sources utilized in the book for both text and illustrations. I found this book particularly relevant in light of current events in the Middle East, and a good introduction to military history. It provides an overview that is both succinct and richly detailed.” ―Renaissance Magazine (January 2009)

“In addition to the excellent and highly readable prose, there is a considerable amount of period artwork in the form of drawings and paintings to show what life was like and what some of the leading personalities looked like. This is ably enhanced by the superb illustrations of Peter Dennis, who has illustrated a large number of Osprey books depicting this era in history. Overall, a book I found to be quite engrossing and one that tells the story of the beginning of the eventual downfall of the Ottoman Empire.” ―Scott Van Aken, modelingmadness.com (March 2008)

“All of [the campaign] is described here, with excellent maps as well as colour plates. Very highly recommended.” ―John Prigent, Internet Modeler (March 2008)

Good summary account on the last high tide of Islam against Europe
By lordhoot
In less then 100 pages, Simon Millar managed to write an excellent summary account of the last major military offensive conducted by Islamic Ottoman Empire against Christian Europe in 1683 when the Turks tried but failed to capture the capital city of the Holy Roman Empire, Vienna.

The book follows the typical Osprey Campaign series format where the background information on the campaign, its leaders and the military forces involved were given in a brief summary. However, the author did a pretty good job making it informative but not too detail. The book comes with excellent maps and illustrations that convey the subject matter quite well. The narrative proves to be quite interesting and author writes with prose and insights that make the book easy to read as well as enjoyable. I thought it was pretty ironic that the Polish kingdom that saved Vienna in 1683 would be dismembered by the same political unit that they saved within the hundred years period. This also marked the long decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire that will end its existence after World War I and the last time an militant Islam wages a war against the Christian heartland until the current time. The Ottoman Empire's efforts against Vienna in 1683 is not a well known subject matter for many, including myself and I thought the book filled the void quite excellently along the basic level.

What Happened to the Maps?
By R. A Forczyk
In Osprey's Campaign 191, Vienna 1683, author Simon Millar tells the story of the last great Ottoman campaign of conquest in Europe. This is a dramatic period in history, charged with emotion and ideology on both sides, although these aspects are played down in favor of a strait-up campaign narrative. In describing the campaign, the author is able to stay on track and stick to essentials, resulting in a cogent summary of the military operations, although somewhat devoid of analysis. Furthermore, the narrative is weakened by the inadequate number and indifferent quality of the maps used to support it - in stark contrast to most Osprey volumes. On the other hand, the volume is enhanced by the superb artwork of Peter Dennis. In sum, good text, poor maps, good battle scenes.

The author begins with an introduction that sketches out the security environment facing Austria in 1683, which seems to stress that Louis XIV posed more of a threat to the Hapsburgs than the Ottomans, which seems a bit strange. Certainly France was interested in making gains against Hapsburg dominions in the Low Countries, Germany and Italy, but unlike the Ottomans, the French armies were unlikely to march on Vienna, massacre the population and burn the city to the ground. Indeed, the author appears to be confusing two different styles of warfare (limited, focused on exchange of provinces versus total, focused on exchange of cultures). The section on opposing commanders is decent, but devotes far more space to Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I who played only a small role in the actual campaign, as compared to the thin blurb on Count Ernst Starhemberg who led the actual defense of Vienna. I think most of us would rather know more about the soldiers who actually won/lost the battle, than the figureheads who watched afar from a convent window. The author does paint a convincing portrait of Kara Mustafa Pasha, the Ottoman grand vizier who staked his reputation on taking Vienna.

The section on opposing armies is a bit skimpy at four pages, covering the Imperial forces, the Polish-Lithuanian Army and the Ottoman Army. Four uniform illustrations by Peter Dennis did highlight this section. However, the order of battle is a complete disappointment, with only generic totals listed. Does the author mean that he can find no greater detail on the Vienna garrison that it consisted of about 12,000 men in 72 infantry companies and a regiment of cavalry? Seems a bit lame. The volume has a total of seven 2-D Maps (Central and Eastern Europe in 1683; Vienna and the River Danube in 1683; the siege of Vienna; the Tatar Raids into Austria; the opposing sides concentrate their forces on Vienna; the march of the Christian forces through the Wienerwald; the reconquest of Hungary) but only one 3-D Map (the Battle of Kahlenberg, 12 September 1683). There are also three battle scenes (the Ottomans arrive before Vienna; an Ottoman attack on the city walls is repelled; the charge of the Polish winged hussars) by Peter Dennis

The most difficult section of the book to follow is the 14 pages on the beginning of the campaign, since the maps don't show the Ottoman advance on Vienna and their outmaneuvering of the Austrian blocking forces. In this section, the author notes that Austrian mobilization was hindered by economic weakness and the Ottoman violation of an existing peace treaty. Certainly the best section in this volume is the 21-page section on the actual defense of Vienna. Unfortunately, the lack of proper maps makes it very difficult to follow the author's description of the various Ottoman assaults and mining operations, since the maps fail to identify the bastions. Furthermore, the one 2-D map he provides does not show the position of Ottoman artillery batteries or much detail on the siege works. Nor is there any real mention of casualties, so it is difficult to gauge whether the besiegers were gaining on the defenders.

The Austro-Bavarian-Saxon-Polish relief of Vienna is covered in the 17-page section on the battle of Kahlenberg. This action is described in some detail, particularly the effects of terrain on the Allied advance, but it is far from clear why the Ottomans lost this battle. The final sections cover the aftermath of the campaign, including the final defeat of the retreating Ottoman invasion army at the Battle of Parkany and the resultant execution of Kara Mustafa for his failure. Although the author provides a brief section on the battlefield today, I was surprised that he made no mention of the Museum of Military History in Vienna, which has exhibits on this battle. Overall, not a bad volume and one that certainly summarizes a less-well-known campaign, but with a little effort it could have been much better.

3.5 stars, a Good Introduction to the Battle but with Serious Analytical Gaps
By Yoda
This book, as part of the Osprey campaign series, follows the typical format. It starts off with a brief description of the history of the region and the geopolitical balance. From the Austrian side it does a fairly good job primarily by discussing (but not analyzing in any depth) the fact that Austria faced serious and simultaneous threats from both the West (in the form of Louis XIV regime) and the East (the Ottoman state). The book does not examine what the immediate threat was from Louis XIV, a fact that is of some importance as it permitted the Austrians to concentrate all their forces (but not some of their German allies' forces who were not that significant in aggregate terms anyway) against the Ottomans at the critical time. The book makes no mention whatsoever of any external threats the Ottoman state faced.

Simon Millar, the author, then goes on to briefly discuss the upper echelon military leaders and heads of state involved. In a nutshell, all the military leaders were both experienced and competent. The heads of states military backgrounds are also discussed albeit this is not critical as both pre-delegated the running of the campaigns to subordinate generals. The discussion of the armies is quite rudimentary in that it covers troop types and quality but does not cover other important factors such as troop morale or the quality of lower and middle level officers and training.

Next is the lengthy discussion of the events leading to the battle and the battle itself. Here the book, unfortunately, is rather weak. This is so primarily for two reasons. One is that there is no discussion or analysis as to what the Ottoman state hoped, from the strategic perspective, to accomplish through this goal. Was it a stepping stone to the conquest of the rest of Europe? Just to eliminate a potential threat in on the Western borders? From the Austrian side there is no discussion as to why Leopold, the Austrian Emperor, was so caught by surprise by the Ottoman attack. The Austrians had not kept their fixed fortfications intact during the preceeding peace treaty with the Ottoman era period and barely even had time to raise an army and take advantage of available allies' armed forces. This, even as the author admits, was a very critical factor in almost causing defeat. This campaign was almost lost before it began as a result. Before the battle fortification improvements were barely completed and the required armies were barely raised. Why did this happen? Was Leopold expecting the peace treaty then in effect with the Ottoman state to hold until its end? Did he think the Ottoman state was too weak? Were there any other reasons? Considering the fact that this almost decided the campaign, even before it was fought, is a serious lapse on the part of Mr. Millar.

With respect to the actual siege itself, the author does an excellent job. This is the strongest part of the book. We learn that towards the end, both the Ottoman side and the Austrian forces under siege in Vienna were at the end of their ropes. At just juncture the Austrian and allied relieving forces made their appearance and defeated the Ottoman forces outside of Vienna at Kahlenberg. The battle there is also adequately described albeit some maps would have been helpful in better illustrating the course of the battle.

Finally the book concludes with the "aftermath" and "battlefields today" chapters. Unfortunately the aftermath chapter is disappointingly weak as there is no analysis or discussion of the implications of the Ottoman defeat beyond the immediate defeat per se. The geopolitical and military consequences, which so needed to be analyzed, are not very unfortunately not covered. In the decades after the campaign Austria was becoming a more powerful state while the Ottoman state went into decline. Did this battle have anything to do with this? Were there other serious consequences as a result of the campaign (i.e., a lengthy peace)? The reader comes away with question marks over his head. The short "battlefield today" section provides the reader with the topology today along with a few sites to visit but, considering it is only about a page in length, the discussion is quite rudimentary.

In short, this book provides readers with only about an hour to an hour and a half to spend a good starting point but, due to the fact it leaves to many questions unanswered, can only garner a 3.5 star rating.
