Winner of both the Guardian Award and the Carnegie Medal, this is an all-time classic, combining mystery, adventure, history and a complex set of human relationships. It all begins with the scratching in the ceiling. From the moment Alison discovers the dinner service in the attic, with its curious pattern of floral owls, a chain of events is set in progress that is to effect everybody's lives. Relentlessly, Alison, her step-brother Roger and Welsh boy Gwyn are drawn into the replay of a tragic Welsh legend - a modern drama played out against a background of ancient jealousies. As the tension mounts, it becomes apparent that only by accepting and facing the situation can it be resolved.

"...A rare imaginative feat and the taste that it leaves is haunting." The Observer "One of the first and best [novels] for and about teenagers; it remains one of the most original and gripping ghost stories... timeless." Amanda Craig, The Times "Alan Garner's The Owl Service is not meant only for children or anyone else; it's a novel; and not many better novels will be published this year...The power grows, throbs nearer, builds to unbearable tension, and comes to wild release in the last few pages." The Book Bag "This book is a superb piece of architecture in which every detail plays its proper part." Growing Point

When Alison hears noises in the attic and discovers a set of old dishes decorated with owls, she sets in motion fantastic events that bind her to her new stepbrother, Roger, and bring anguish to her new friend, Gwyn. Wayne Forester's accents are the perfect vehicle for interpreting this tale rooted in the ancient myths of Wales. The conflicts between the local folk who have lived and worked here for generations and the incoming British owners on holiday are apparent. Forester excels at individualizing the Welsh villagers who comment on the story's events like a Greek chorus. This enigmatic novel leaves many questions unanswered, but the extensive liner notes provide helpful background, supplying a short summary of the relevant myths and information about the author. Creepy Story with Unobvious Ending, Read Effectively
By Stephen Mann
This review is for the audio book on CD version of The Owl Service by Alan Garner.
I'm not going to go over the story here, as too many other reviewers have done so with painstaking (and painful) detail, except to say that the action takes place in Wales in the early to mid 60s, and concerns a population forced to periodically witness the recapitulation of a folk myth that can be found as one of the stories in The Mabinogion (once available as a translation by Penguin Classics), a collection of Welsh mythical stories that predate the written word.
The reading here is excellent, with just the right amount of characterization (aka "doing the voices") to make the story come alive in your headphones. I bought it for my teenager, who ignored it so I played it on my car stereo while she was with me. We only got four chapters done by the time we were finished with our errands, but she was eager for the rest. "Creepy story, Dad".
I first encountered this story as a TV production when I was younger than my kid is now. I read it when I was in my late 20s, and gave a copy to my girlfriend (now my wife) early in our relationship. I still found the reading here to be fresh, intense and riveting, some 25 years later.
You will too. Recommended.

A little background helps a lot
By Pop Bop
If I recall my Mabinogion correctly, Blodeuwedd was the girl made by a wizard from flowers. She was created in order to be the bride of a prince who had been cursed never to marry mortal woman. She conspired with her lover to murder the prince, and as punishment was turned into an owl.
It is not by accident that the flower pattern on the dinner service can be rearranged to form owls.
This is the root story behind "The Owl Service", and I think it's helpful to know the tale before reading the book, since it adds a bit of clarification that is otherwise lacking. That said, the book is wonderfully atmospheric, and a faithful adaptation of a classic Welsh tale to a modern setting. This has been done well in some children's books, (Nimmo's Magician trilogy and Cooper's Dark is Rising set), but is often less successful in more adult treatments.
If you would like a good, challenging, moody and engrossing tale, this book is well worth trying.

A good story!
By wolf11
I first read this as a young teenager in the early 70s. And recently reread it about 40 years later! It still has the sort of slight creepy dark vibe which does not seem dated. the teenage characters still ring true. the writer lets you draw your own conclusions in this story that involves mythology. A good story!!!
