terrorists and their foes
By Mike Garrison
This one of three MacInnes novels featuring Robert Renwick as the hero. They are best read in order: PRELUDE TO TERROR, THE HIDDEN TARGET, and then CLOAK OF DARKNESS.

This was the penultimate novel for MacInnes. Almost all of her novels were about the struggle against either Nazism or Communism, but in this novel the focus has shifted more to international terrorism. Renwick is a former NATO intelligence officer who has started a new organization InterIntell. Like InterPol, they exist to be a clearinghouse for information, but instead of drugs they focus on terrorism.

It doesn't follow the normal conventions of a MacInnes novel. It is more procedural than most, because Renwick is a professional rather than her usual "inspired amateur". Also, Renwick is married, so the usual MacInnes romance plot is somewhat modified.

But it is a strong novel, with more than a few really surprising plot twists. (MacInnes usually doesn't rely on plot twists.) I recommend it, but do try to read the other two first.

Slightly dated late 1970s plot but wonderful plot and writing

Slightly dated late 1970s plot but wonderful plot and writing. Helen Macinnes is one of the best. Her descriptions of places, of people, of situations are incredible - she is a travel writer as well as a suspense writer. The Robert Renwick books are some of her best work

Always worth reading
By Polly Cy
I have been a devoted fan of Helen MacInnes's work since the 1960s. I have never known her to disappoint. She was a thoughtful observer of politics and political events, which of course guarantees my interest. (I am a political science professor who specializes on Russia [then the USSR] and Eastern Europe.) Her specialty was always the "talented amateur" caught up in espionage. One way she helped establish a realistic fictional universe was to create a supporting cast of professionals. Certain characters turn up, often with no more than a half dozen lines. Mimi, Frank Rosenfeld, Elias, Johann Keppler, Chris Holland, and more appear, often so briefly that only the most attentive readers may catch their moment on stage. (Keppler appears here, some 40 years after his debut in Pray for a Brave Heart.) The Robert Renwick stories differ in a number of important areas. It is the first time that she employed a recurring protagonist. He's married. (Or he marries at the end of the first story.) He's a professional, working first for NATO then helping found for a private intelligence network concentrating on terrorism. He's an American, but his Interintel organization is based on Europe. The US is "sympathetic" but not an affiliate. What does not change is her extraordinary sense of "place" and her strong moral code. She is very much a product of her time and background, and her greatest skill lay in her ability to create a completely believable universe and people it with equally believable characters. I can, and often do, reread her books, knowing how they will end, simply for the pleasure of immersing myself in her world. I'm as much a fan today as I was nearly half a century ago, and am delighted that her books are being reissued for Kindle.
