Letter to a Christian Nation, by Sam Harris

"Forty-four percent of the American population is convinced that Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead sometime in the next fifty years," writes Sam Harris. "Imagine the consequences if any significant component of the U.S. government actually believed that the world was about to end and that its ending would be glorious. The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this, purely on the basis of religious dogma, should be considered a moral and intellectual emergency." In response to his award-winning bestseller The End of Faith, Sam Harris received thousands of letters from Christians excoriating him for not believing in God. Letter to A Christian Nation is his courageous and controversial reply. Using rational argument, Harris offers a measured refutation of the beliefs that form the core of fundamentalist Christianity. Addressing current topics ranging from intelligent design and stem-cell research to the connections between religion and violence, Letter to a Christian Nation boldly challenges the influence that faith has on American public life.

Book of Epistle
By Rabid Reader
A couple of weeks ago, I read "It's Dangerous To Believe," which was a treatise on how evangelical Christians are feeling very put-upon by secular society...to the point that they feel frightened...and the author of that book referenced this one. So, I bought it and read it, since although I am secularist, I'd never managed to read it.

I found the book written in a kindly--not strident at all--voice.

It was a clear explanation of why religion doesn't make sense to the secularist. And why, if perhaps a religious person gave it a lot of thought...s/he might see that Harris's exegesis is sensible.

It's a directed investigation of how any religion, not just Christianity, is considered a vast and frightening force for destruction. How often religion has informed incorrect views of the world, promoted demonstrable anachronisms, and why even moderate religiously people enable those less-moderate (like the 9/11 terrorists, or Inquisitioners, or Nazis) to justify horrors. As though normal religions were a sort of gateway drug to radicalism.

Overall, I liked this book. I imagine I was predisposed to. Yet, even I (a heretic, I guess) found a few arguments and facts I had not here-to-fore known nor considered.

You will like this book if you are curious about why a non-religious person isn't religious, and why a non-religious person thinks you should be too.

You will probably not like this book if you are steadfast in your faith. But, just as I read the book by the evangelical, and learned from it? Maybe you'd like to give it a try. Education and knowledge is never a bad thing.

Great, brief and accessible book.

I forgot I already had a copy of this great little book. I was organizing my bookshelves after acquiring some lovely new texts from Hitchens and the like and discovered this one hiding out (I have to layer my books 2 rows deep so it got lost ;) Anyway, I am glad to have a second copy so maybe I can share it with someone else one day.
I would own it JUST for the erudite introduction. Sam Harris is reliably and consistently judgmental of all beliefs that intrinsically support division and violence. His tone is steady and rational. Reading his book is like listening to him speak in an interview or debate or even on his Waking Up podcast. I wonder at people who think him to be shrill and combative; perhaps they are going into it on the defense and find every disagreement to instead be an angry tirade.
Whatever the case, I think people can really benefit from reading this and understanding Sam's point of view on the subject. Great, brief and accessible book.

I'm not religious and have no faith. I list those as two separate things on purpose. I'm uneducated in any bible. So as a person with fresh eyes I am appalled and have preached on exactly everything he points out. The bible passages that he uses I'd never heard of and can't describe my level of disbelief or abhorrence. I've never understood why, as a devout Christian, they pick and choose parts of their religion or book of faith that best suit then to follow our condemn others. If I were a God this would piss me off. They pick and choose what parts of the bible, such as selling your daughter or killing her, that aren't practiced anymore. I don't advocate one luck of the bible, but my point is still the same.

I hope religion ends. I don't care if you have faith; the deep, personal relationship with a God in your mind, but I do hope religion dies and never, ever comes back. Then I feel like we can truly see what the world and human population is capable of. Then maybe we can truly heal those sick with our amazing efforts in medicine and not in prayer. Then maybe billions of women will stop suffering at the hands of religion. Maybe genocide and slavery will stop being permissible and even required.

I hope it ends so we can really see our true evolutionary potential.
