Barbara Gail Montero (B.A. University of California at Berkeley, Ph.D. University of Chicago) is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the City University of New York. She has been awarded research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Her work focuses on one or the other of two different notions of body: body as the physical or material basis of everything, and body as the moving, breathing, flesh and blood instrument that we use when we run, walk, or dance. Before entering academia, she was a professional ballet dancer.

For forty years, he was instructor of artistic anatomy at the Art Students League. He also served as Adjunct Professor of Drawing at Columbia University and Professor of Art at Cooper Union. Hale was the author of Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters and co-author of Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters. Terence Coyle teaches figure painting and drawing at the Art Students League of New York and is the lecturer in Artistic Anatomy at the National Academy of Design School of Fine Arts in New York City. Coyle's paintings have been highly acclaimed and are in important collections throughout the country including the Museum of the City of New York; the New York State Museum in Albany; the Museum of Performing Arts, Billy Rose Theatre Collection; Fordham University; and, among other notables, in the collection of Ms. Helen Hayes. He co-authored with Robert Beverly Hale Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters and Albinus on Anatomy.

Companion to tape series by Robert B. Hale

I purchased the companion tape series from Jo-An Pictures Ltd in NYC (212-532-5003) several years ago. The book and tapes record the lectures given by Robert Beverly Hale at the Art Student's League in NYC. You may never find better instruction on artistic anatomy and drawing the human form! He was without doubt the greatest instructor of this subject! The tapes are almost like attending his classes! You must draw from life as well as study this material to master the subject. If you cannot afford the tapes, at least get this book! You will not find a better investment but you must also make the effort! A valid observation from his lectures: 'You can not draw a form, if you don't know it exists.' If you want to draw figures that will impress other artists, clients with medical training or other sophisticated viewers, then master the lessons in this book!

I believe Tony Ryder may have attended Robert Hale's lectures at the Art Student's League. Also get Tony Ryder's book entitled "The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing". It represents the other traditional approach to figure drawing. His explanation of light and shadow on the human form is the best I have ever seen. He emphasizes that it takes many hours to complete a finished drawing. Quick sketches are good for warming up but it's only one aspect of practice. Both books are well worth the investment!

A masterpiece of life drawing tuition

Mr Coyle has done great justice to his old mentor Robert Beverley HALE with this magnificent book. The lessons are based on Mr Hales teachings on the techniques and thinking of the great master drawers, and not only are the examples all master works, but innovative use of coloured line overlays makes sometimes difficult concepts abundantly clear. The real point of this book, as with all R.B.Hale books, is that YOU can learn to think in the same highly visually intelligent way as these greats of the past, and learn to apply that thinking to your own creations. BRAVO Messrs Hale et Coyle!

I bought several books on this subject. This one blows the others away. You will not need another book on this subject. The Lincoln and Nixon head figures are amazing. The author knows his stuff.

A wonderful do-it-yourself book for kids

I went up on Amazon to try and find some books that my children could do independently. This was one that I chose, and I am so glad that I did. The kids were fascinated with all the neat hand shadows they could make out of their hands, and how relatively simple they were to copy and make! They already had a fascination with hand shadows and flashlights and now they are even more fascinated. The book has page after page of neat, detailed shadows that are somehow still very simple to make. What really struck me about this book is that it will be excellent for years to come, it was interesting enough for me to look through it and try the shadows in addition to my very young children. I can't recommend a book higher than this one!

A great book. It should come with a little flashlight, just for fun. I had a lot of of fun with this one. My six year old thought it was a really fun activity...and she still plays with shadows...even weeks later. A great buy for all the fun the kids will have:)

I love all the Disney Book Group books I have so far. Great pictures and, you know, good story :-)
I will include some photos so you can decide yourself. If you like The Little Mermaid just go for it and don't look anywhere else.
Keep in mind it is a big book so better for toddler or older kids.

My daughter loves looking at books before bed. Thought this would be fun since it's basically the movie in a book form. Very long to read, however. We read bedtime stories and this one has got to take me 20-30 minutes!
