Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community, by Robert D. Putnam

Once we bowled in leagues, usually after work—but no longer. This seemingly small phenomenon symbolizes a significant social change that Robert Putnam has identified in this brilliant volume, which The Economist hailed as “a prodigious achievement.”

Drawing on vast new data that reveal Americans’ changing behavior, Putnam shows how we have become increasingly disconnected from one another and how social structures—whether they be PTA, church, or political parties—have disintegrated. Until the publication of this groundbreaking work, no one had so deftly diagnosed the harm that these broken bonds have wreaked on our physical and civic health, nor had anyone exalted their fundamental power in creating a society that is happy, healthy, and safe.

Like defining works from the past, such as The Lonely Crowd and The Affluent Society, and like the works of C. Wright Mills and Betty Friedan, Putnam’s Bowling Alone has identified a central crisis at the heart of our society and suggests what we can do.

Amazon.com Review
Few people outside certain scholarly circles had heard the name Robert D. Putnam before 1995. But then this self-described "obscure academic" hit a nerve with a journal article called "Bowling Alone." Suddenly he found himself invited to Camp David, his picture in People magazine, and his thesis at the center of a raging debate. In a nutshell, he argued that civil society was breaking down as Americans became more disconnected from their families, neighbors, communities, and the republic itself. The organizations that gave life to democracy were fraying. Bowling became his driving metaphor. Years ago, he wrote, thousands of people belonged to bowling leagues. Today, however, they're more likely to bowl alone: Television, two-career families, suburban sprawl, generational changes in values--these and other changes in American society have meant that fewer and fewer of us find that the League of Women Voters, or the United Way, or the Shriners, or the monthly bridge club, or even a Sunday picnic with friends fits the way we have come to live. Our growing social-capital deficit threatens educational performance, safe neighborhoods, equitable tax collection, democratic responsiveness, everyday honesty, and even our health and happiness. The conclusions reached in the book Bowling Alone rest on a mountain of data gathered by Putnam and a team of researchers since his original essay appeared. Its breadth of information is astounding--yes, he really has statistics showing people are less likely to take Sunday picnics nowadays. Dozens of charts and graphs track everything from trends in PTA participation to the number of times Americans say they give "the finger" to other drivers each year. If nothing else, Bowling Alone is a fascinating collection of factoids. Yet it does seem to provide an explanation for why "we tell pollsters that we wish we lived in a more civil, more trustworthy, more collectively caring community." What's more, writes Putnam, "Americans are right that the bonds of our communities have withered, and we are right to fear that this transformation has very real costs." Putnam takes a stab at suggesting how things might change, but the book's real strength is in its diagnosis rather than its proposed solutions. Bowling Alone won't make Putnam any less controversial, but it may come to be known as a path-breaking work of scholarship, one whose influence has a long reach into the 21st century. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly
"If you don't go to somebody's funeral, they won't come to yours," Yogi Berra once said, neatly articulating the value of social networks. In this alarming and important study, Putnam, a professor of sociology at Harvard, charts the grievous deterioration over the past two generations of the organized ways in which people relate to one another and partake in civil life in the U.S. For example, in 1960, 62.8% of Americans of voting age participated in the presidential election, whereas by 1996, the percentage had slipped to 48.9%. While most Americans still claim a serious "religious commitment," church attendance is down roughly 25%-50% from the 1950s, and the number of Americans who attended public meetings of any kind dropped 40% between 1973 and 1994. Even the once stable norm of community life has shifted: one in five Americans moves once a year, while two in five expect to move in five years. Putnam claims that this has created a U.S. population that is increasingly isolated and less empathetic toward its fellow citizens, that is often angrier and less willing to unite in communities or as a nation. Marshaling a plentiful array of facts, figures, charts and survey results, Putnam delivers his message with verve and clarity. He concludes his analysis with a concise set of potential solutions, such as educational programs, work-based initiatives and funded community-service programs, offering a ray of hope in what he perceives to be a dire situation. From Library Journal
Putnam (Stanfield Professor of International Peace, Harvard) probes American history to identify, interpret, and weigh the forces influencing the major drop in civic involvement that characterized American society in the last third of the 20th century. Buttressing his arguments with a wide range of resources, references, and statistics from government, academic, and commercial sources, he explores the roles of generational, social, and technological factors as they relate to the dwindling of our nation's social capital. Putnam argues that "[the level of] social connectedness matters to our lives in the most profound way." How to respond to its current nadir? Putnam finds striking parallels between the situation today and the declining levels of social interaction in the late 1800s. He cites the rejuventating waves of change and reform generated during the Progressive Era, which stemmed that earlier decline, and suggests that a comparable burst of social inventiveness and political reform could activate the much-needed rebuilding of civic involvement and social connection in our time. This substantive and stimulating work is highly recommended for academics and a thoughtful general public audience.

The Original Mainstream Work On The Erosion Of Community; So Successful It's Not Necessary To Read
By Charles
This is a famous book, but “Bowling Alone” was not what I expected. What I expected was social commentary. What I got was social science, proving with reams of statistics what is now a commonplace, that social capital in America has eroded massively over the past several decades. Of course, that it’s a commonplace is due largely to this book, published in 2000 as a follow-up to a 1995 article, so that’s hardly a criticism of the book. But, paradoxically, it’s not clear that most readers nowadays will get much value, by itself, out of reading this very valuable book.

That’s not to say readers can’t get much value out of this book. But to do so today, you have to evaluate the data it provides with frameworks it doesn’t provide. I found that reading this book while keeping in mind some of the insights provided by Yuval Levin’s recent “A Fractured Republic” helped me better understand the causes of the decline in social capital. In particular, Levin notes that after World War II, Americans have become increasingly individualistic, in a rebound effect from prior consolidation, which helps explain the trends Putnam documents.

Putnam begins by convincingly demonstrating that the same pattern of erosion of social capital has occurred in nearly every area of American life. That pattern is, basically, an increase in participation (and resultant social capital) at the beginning of the 20th Century; an even greater increase in participation after World War II; and a precipitous fall-off from roughly 1970 through the 1990s. He demonstrates that this is true of all forms of political participation, civic participation, religious participation, workplace interactions, informal social connections, volunteering and philanthropy, and mutual trust.

After proving this erosion to his, and the reader’s, satisfaction, Putnam tries to figure out why this has happened. He carefully parses various possibilities, from increased pressures for time and money, women entering the work force, suburbanization, TV and the Internet, generational change and others. He concludes there is no single culprit and each of these has some responsibility, although TV is the largest driver. Putnam considers only materialist drivers and does not consider philosophical shifts in American thought, probably because those would be difficult to capture in social science surveys (although it seems to me it could be done, by asking about opinions, rather than activities, while keeping in mind that such self-reporting is subject to all sorts of biases and inaccuracies).

Putnam does an excellent job of sub-analyzing the data he presents. For example, he is careful to distinguish trends across generations from those occurring within generations (generally, intra-generational trends are swamped by inter-generational trends—in other words, it’s the younger generations in which social capital is actually eroding). He is also careful to note where the data is uncertain, and to avoid sweeping conclusions. And he makes interesting distinctions that are relevant to his arguments, such as between bridging social capital, that creates new connections among disparate people, and bonding social capital, that creates tighter social connections among people with something in common.

Finally, Putnam optimistically lays out a program for restoring social capital, analogizing the current age to the late 19th Century Gilded Age and, among other things, citing Booth Tarkington’s laments about the decline of social capital in the early 20th Century as evidence, given the increase in social capital later in the 20th Century, that the pattern can be reversed. Putnam’s specific suggestions are not very detailed—they are couched as, for example, “Let us find ways to ensure that by 2010 significantly more Americans will participate in (not merely consume or ‘appreciate’) cultural activities from group dancing to songfests to community theater to rap festivals.” How this is to be done Putnam does not really say, other than to claim that “top-down versus bottom-up” is a false dichotomy—“the roles of national and local institutions in restoring American community need to be complementary.”

But the problem here is that top-down actions have been a major cause of the problem of eroding social capital, and one that Putnam mostly ignores, since he assigns causal value exclusively to bottom-up causes. Long before Putnam, commentators noted that the growth of the Leviathan state was crowding out intermediary institutions of the type whose decline Putnam decries. In 1953, Robert Nisbet pointed this out, though he did it qualitatively, not with Putnam’s quantitative approach. Nisbet noted that as Leviathan grows, as it did from Progressive times on but most of all starting in the 1960s, intermediary institutions decay, since people seek meaning, and when they cannot obtain meaning on the local level, they will turn to national meaning, thus strengthening the central state (while obtaining only counterfeit meaning).

Similarly, this year (2016), Yuval Levin (who extensively cites Putnam) noted that “As the national government grows more centralized, and takes over the work otherwise performed by mediating institutions—from families and communities to local governments and charities—individuals become increasingly atomized; and as individuals grow apart from one another, the need for centralized government provision seems to grow.” Moreover, “In liberating many individuals from oppressive social constraints, we have also estranged many from their families and unmoored them from their communities, work and faith. In accepting a profusion of options in every part of our lives to meet our particular needs and wants, we have also unraveled the institutions of an earlier era, and with it the public’s broader faith in institutions of all kinds.” Levin points both to the expansion of government and to a widespread acceptance of “expressive individualism” as causes for the erosion in social capital.

These are the type of framework insights Putnam does not provide, and they suggest that government may be the problem, or a large part of it. That’s not to say that the national government is unable to help with the decline in social capital, but it is to say that its nature is not best suited to that role, and recognizing its culpability in the erosion of social capital is necessary to properly analyze the problem. Similarly, it’s important to recognize philosophical shifts in Americans themselves.

In fact, at no point does Putnam assign blame to government action as a possible base cause for the national decline in social capital (although government actions, such as splitting Indianapolis with an interstate, do occasionally figure in anecdotes). The huge increase in government scope and power that began in the 1960s is exactly coterminous with the drop in social capital that Putnam documents. That, by itself, proves nothing. But it’s at least a coincidence that is worth addressing, and Putnam doesn’t. Government, in fact, figures nearly not at all in Putnam’s book, other than indirectly, with respect to individuals’ reduced civic engagement in the political process. In my mind, this blind spot is the biggest defect of Putnam’s book.

That said, I am less convinced by a related frequent criticism of Putnam’s argument—that he ignores modern reasons why Americans might choose to be less politically involved, such as the perception both on the Left and the Right that the system is “rigged.” The supporters of Bernie Sanders point to the political power of the rich and connected; conservatives point to the federal government’s, and particularly the Supreme Court’s, seizing of power that used to be devolved to the local level, where individuals could have an impact. But if you think about it for a little while, those things may be true, and they may affect civic engagement in politics, but they say little about areas of social capital other than political involvement, such as religious involvement and workplace interaction. Therefore, this seems like a weak criticism, although attractive to those who view the world solely or largely through a political lens.

Putnam has written books since this one, including a recent one on income immobility which seems like it might be very interesting. I’m curious if there is data from the past fifteen years on the trends that Putnam addresses. While “Bowling Alone” does have a website, most of the links in it don’t work, which is too bad. If he hasn’t already, it’d be great if Putnam updated some of his data from this book, and let us know if his analysis and conclusions have changed.

For example, Putnam notes that non-privatized (i.e., public) religious belief is the single largest driver of social capital. How has the modern tendency away from religious belief, accelerating since 2000, affected social capital? And, of course, this book was written before the rise of social media (although Putnam does discuss Internet social activity in some detail, as it existed when the book was written, including its impact on reducing constraints of simultaneous timing on communication, and the “poverty of social cues” in Internet communication). How has the utter dominance of Facebook and similar media affected social capital? These, and many similar questions, would be worth answering.

So, while Putnam’s conclusions have, I think, been very valuable for society, I’m not sure that actually reading this book is necessary or valuable for most people. But if you are very interested in the topic, and read this in conjunction with other works, it may well be worth your time, even today.

When Social Commentary is Overwhelmed by Stats and Verbiage
By Michael Griswold
Robert Putnam has something very important to say that I think would be of interest to any American whether in a small town or a big city. Putnam is making the case that Americans are less civically engaged then they were a generation or two previous and that this disengagement is troubling for the health and functioning of American society. This idea is nothing remarkable, just turn on your television and watch the news and hear about the violence in this country. There seems to be a general lack of respect for the value of human life these days and this disconnection could potentially be explained in part by our declining sense of community outlined by Putnam in Bowling Alone.

The problem is that Putnam’s core thesis of declining civic engagement being problematic for American society is buried underneath an admittedly impressive array of figures and statistics that left a man that has a Master’s Degree befuddled at times. This opens up a bigger problem, it is a dense and heavy slog that while fine as a academic work, may not make its’ way into the hands of the people who could really use the information to affect change within their community. Not everyone is blessed to have had access to the book smarts that I have, nor should we believe that a bunch of academics are going to be the saviors of the world. Street smarts and community knowledge are going to be needed just as much as academics to deal with this problem.

While other reviewers have brought up the validity issue of some or all of the measures of social engagement that Putnam uses, I am more sympathetic because it is a difficult concept to measure. Bowling Alone was for me a very sobering analysis that made me reconsider the things in my own personal life and if a book can do that, than it is obviously quite valuable. I just wish that I didn’t have to wade through 411 pages of verbose prose and stats to have this sobering wake up call.

Social Capital and Reciprocity
By Orrin Woodward
Robert Putnam's book is several books in one.

The first section (about the first 4 chapters) drew me in with a synopsis of the decline of community in America.

The second section, through chapter 15, nearly put me to sleep. :) Thankfully, however, I kept reading because from chapter 16 until the end of the book was so good, that I give it 5 stars despite the slogging in the middle. Putnam's five keys for social capital was worth the entire book. Here is my takeaways:

Putnam list five specific areas where the trust and understanding inured by social capital helps translate aspirations into realities:

1. Social capital allows citizens to resolve collective problems more easily through improved teamwork.
2. Social capital greases the wheels that allow communities to advance smoothly through improved trust.
3. Social capital helps widen the awareness of fellow citizens that their fates are intertwined through improved understanding.
4. Social capital serves as conduits for the flow of helpful information and resources to accomplish community and individual goals.
5. Social capital improves individual lives through psychological and biological processes. In fact, numerous studies suggest lives that are rich in social capital cope with trauma and illnesses significantly more effectively.

Despite social capital's overwhelming advantages, Putnam acknowledges its decline, writing, "Americans have had a growing sense at some visceral level of disintegrating social bonds." Furthermore, he writes, "More than 80% of Americans said there should be more emphasis on community, even if it puts more demands on individuals." In sum, social capital isn't just the fuel for Social Power - a necessary check on State Power - but it also enhances individual lives through the sense of belonging engendered within communities. Strikingly, then, the decline of social capital, not only attacks society's freedoms, but also attacks an individual's well-being. Simply put, America cannot remain free without a revival of Social Power through building social capital in voluntary communities. With so much at stake, why aren't more people focused on restoring voluntary communities throughout America and the West?

Christianity and the Great Deception (The Original Revelation Series) (Volume 3), by Rav Sha'ul

In book 1 of The Original Revelation series, Creation Cries Out!, we learned that our Creator’s plan of salvation was written in the stars as a witness to all humanity of a coming Messiah. In that first book I explained how the angelic realm corrupted that message and taught mankind to worship the Sun. In book 2 we learned how that “lie of Sun worship” was formulated into a formal religion in Babylon. In this book, book 3 of The Original Revelation series, we are going to trace this Mystery Religion of Babylon as it was formally transferred from Babylon to Rome and became known as The Cult of Sol Invictus (the cult of the invincible sun). The Babylonian High Priesthood was conferred upon the Emperor of Rome as Pontifus Maximus (High Priest of the Sungod). We still to this day use that title for the High Priest of the Sungod, we call this position The Pontiff (Pope) who today presides over the Babylonian Priesthood. In this book we are going to trace the history of the Christian Church, its rituals, its gods, its Christ, and compare them to both the religion of Babylon and the revelation of God in The Bible. We are going to ask and answer the hard questions. As the largest religion on Earth is it possible that Christianity is the “wide gate that leads to destruction”? Could it be that Christianity is The Mystery Religion of Babylon that “deceives all mankind” as prophesied? Have we all been led astray by a Greek conquest of the Hebrew faith? Did the victor in the Roman/Jewish Wars literally rewrite history? Did Constantine start a new religion and impose a lie upon humanity at the threat of death? Has humanity been conditioned for 1,500 years not to question “Babylonian rituals and doctrines” by the Catholic Church? Where the “church fathers” pagan? What is the Spirit of the False Messiah and the Spirit of Error? Who is the False Messiah? If you have ever thought to yourself “something is just not right with the Church today” then you will find your answers in this book. This book will be the hardest book you have ever read. It is an eye opening, jaw dropping, pride swallowing, tear jerking reality that will have you on your knees crying out in repentance to the Living God... IF you are His chosen. If you choose to read this book I will show you how deep this rabbit hole goes but... I am only offering you is the Truth. However, most people cannot handle The Truth, that is why the gate to eternal life is very narrow and “few there are that find it” Matthew 7:14.

Christianity Is The Great Deception !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By Max Ard
This book blessed my heart. It spoke the truth as I have never heard it. I am so glad to have come out of the deception of the Christo pagan religion, and the contaminated universal religion of Christianity. Our true Messiah Yahusha is at last being recognized by humanity as King. This author has written 8 books so far and I have not only read them, but have studied them. I have double checked most of his references inside and outside of the Bible. He leaves no stone unturned to get at the facts. He includes photos, images, maps, archeology, and many more sources of which he gleans truth. He includes opposing views giving those sources as well. He is truly a man you can trust. I highly recommend his books. But be ready to be changed forever. check him out at his website at: http://www.sabbathcovenant.com. Search for him on youtube & facebook. I have known him now for over 2 years via the internet. You will not be disappointed in his books.

Yahweh Inspired this Author
By Kathy
Christianity the Great Deception is the thrid book of the Original Revelation Series, a series of profound inspired truth that will, Yahweh willing, change your life forever.

Rav Shaul displays a unique understanding of the Mysteries our Creator hid inside His Word for His children to discover if they would seek Him with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.

This author communicates the truth unlike any other teacher of the Bible you will ever read. Creative, Thoughtful Absurdism
By PattMayne
I've been looking for books like this. It's basically a form of literary psychedelia. The stories in this collection are surreal, stimulating, entertaining, fun, thoughtful and sometimes disturbing. Just like science-fiction needs a plot based on a scientific idea, these stories have plots that are based on a surreal or strange idea.

Occasionally I find writers and stories with a surreal element and I love it. Now that I've found this magazine, now that I've discovered this genre of so-called "Bizarro" or absurdist fiction, I know I have a place to go to get the kind of weird stuff I like.

Great Authors, Great Read
By Allen Taylor
This issue of Bust Down The Door includes stories from some of my favorite authors. Matthew Revert, Cameron Pierce, Kirsten Alene, and D. Harlan Wilson are all veterans of the Bizarro/Absurdist genre, and you'll get great stories from each of these authors. None of them disappoint.

Matthew Revert reviews Steve Lowe's Muscle Memory, which I've read, and I agree point for point with Revert's analysis on this incredible debut novella. His insight into this great work of a New Bizarro Author Series author, and the NBAS overall, is a short-but-terrific read.

Short stories by Pierce, Alene, and Wilson are also great reads. Pierce unleashes his recent novella "Die You Doughnut Bastards." But my favorite story in the journal is one by none of these authors. #30 by Laird Hunt gets into ghost stories with tight, terse, and snappy writing.

Editor Bradley Sands has an eye for a good story and this issue of Bust Down The Door And Eat All The Chickens illustrates his keen taste in authors and stories.

Shalom/Salaam: A Story of a Mystical Fraternity, by Thomas Block

Shalom/Salaam is a groundbreaking study introducing to the popular reader, the story of respectful interfaith relations between Sufis and Jewish spiritual thinkers for nearly one thousand years. From the inception of Islam, to the Golden Age (8th-12th centuries) Jewish-Sufis of Arabia, North Africa and Spain, through the Kabbalists in Spain and the Holy Land, and then into 18th-century European Hasidism, Islamic and Jewish ideas commingled to inspire both paths, as well as strongly influencing the Jewish mystical system. Many medieval Jews interacted with and were influenced by the Sufi way. Moses Maimonides, considered the pre-eminent Jewish medieval thinker, Solomon ibn Gabirol, whose "piyyut" are still sung during the Sabbath liturgy, Judah Halevi, whose work, according to the chief Rabbi of Palestine in the early 20th century, contains that which is most precious about the Jewish soul and hundreds of other seminal Jewish thinkers read Sufi treatises in Arabic, wrote Islamic-inspired mystical odes and sometimes even based their interpretations of Jewish tradition on Sufism.
Some Jewish thinkers went so far as to quote Islamic thinkers directly. Fragments of Sufi tracts are woven through medieval Jewish writings, from those of Moses Maimonides' son Abraham, to Judah Halevi's "Sefer ha-Kuzari." David Maimonides (15th century) went so far as to mention Muslims by name, with paeans to their virtuosity and wisdom.
This study demonstrates the deep and abiding respect that Jewish religious figures often had for Muslim thinkers. It also explores how Islamic influence reverberates within Judaism to this day. This book not only provides readers with a new perspective on Jewish spirituality, but also adds a vital study to the extant literature on Muslim-Jewish relations. It could change how contemporary Jewish-Muslim relations are considered, solidifying an appreciation for how deeply are these two religious paths interconnected.
More than just a historical work, this book provides a fresh perspective on the social, religious and political issues that have complicated Jewish-Muslim relations since the founding of Israel.Popularizing this little-known tale of mutual respect and spiritual love can activate a narrative of peace - so unusual in these difficult times in the Middle East -between these children of Abraham.

The Irreducible Needs Of Children: What Every Child Must Have To Grow, Learn, And Flourish, by T. Berry Brazelton, Stanley I. Greenspan, M

What do babies and young children really need? For the first time, two famed advocates for children cut through all the theories, platitudes, and controversies that surround parenting advice to define what every child must have in the first years of life. They lay out the seven irreducible needs of any child, in any society, and confront such thorny questions as: How much time do children need one-on-one with a parent? What is the effect of shifting caregivers, of custody arrangements? Why are we knowingly letting children fail in school? Nothing is off limits. This short, hard-hitting book, the fruit of decades of experience and caring, sounds a wake-up call for parents, teachers, judges, social workers, policy makers-anyone who cares about the welfare of children.A Merloyd Lawrence Book

Amazon.com Review
Parents can sometimes feel like ships being tossed in the storm--trying to keep their households afloat amidst escalating child-care and health-care costs, declining funding for public schools, and workplaces that do not favor working families. The Irreducible Needs of Children reads like a social compass, or better yet, a family's true north. T. Berry Brazelton, one of the world's most respected pediatricians, joins with one of the most respected child psychiatrists, Stanley Greenspan, to offer parents, as well as caregivers, teachers, policymakers, and even custody-hearing judges clear-cut guidelines for rearing healthy, well-nurtured children.

Each chapter speaks to the fundamental priorities, such as "The Need for Ongoing, Nurturing Relationships" or "The Need for Limit Setting, Structure, and Expectations." In every chapter the two doctors offer a lively dialog as they boldly assert their child-rearing opinions based on solid research and their collective years of wisdom. They then lead into a list of joint recommendations. No topic is too controversial or specific for these hard-core child advocates, including how many hours a baby or toddler should be in child care per week (ideally less than 30), the importance of one-on-one time, setting up child-oriented custody arrangements, and how much homework or television a child should have each day. Although you may not agree with every recommendation, this makes an excellent navigational tool for parents and anyone else who controls the course of children's destinies. --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Pediatrician Brazelton (Touchpoints) and child psychiatrist Greenspan (Building Healthy Minds) join together to present a hard-hitting treatise on what children really need from their parents and from society. While the text is densely written, it is engaging. The two childcare experts share the mutually strong conviction that society is not currently meeting the basic needs of children. Each chapter is devoted to the discussion of an "irreducible" need, such as the Need for Ongoing Nurturing Relationships, the Need for Physical Protection, Safety and Regulation, the Need for Stable Supportive Communities and Cultural Continuity, and the Need to Protect the Future. After each discussion, the authors recommend ways to meet these needs. For instance, Brazelton and Greenspan examine how day care shortchanges children in America and make detailed recommendations on what is needed to improve the situation, such as better training, higher wages and continuity of care. Also powerful are their comments on educational issues and the need for an expanded role by schools and healthcare systems. Policy makers, health-care professionals, educators and parents will find this a thought-provoking but demanding read that poses incisive questions about the way we raise, educate and care for our children. Brazelton and Greenspan offer viable, intelligent solutions to a full deck of problems faced by our country as well as by the global community. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Brazelton and Greenspan give us not the scary, ivory-tower-type book the title implies but a practical, well-organized volume, of value to parents, physicians, teachers, sociologists, and others who wish to improve children's lives locally and globally. Fear, denial, and avoidance are the main enemies in the development of successful and resilient children, the authors say. Stable family, education, and cultural experiences, characterized by understanding, are childhood necessities. Personal, loving parent-child interactions are vital, and time spent with TV and computer games is mostly detrimental. Corrective medical or psychiatric interventions should be prompt; avoid waiting and seeing, but remember that psychiatric drugs can be abused. As for children's lives globally, aid after epidemics and disasters is helpful, but regular aid to improve conditions in areas liable to epidemic and disaster is more practical, say Brazelton and Greenspan. Informative and thought-provoking, the book well may spur discussion of its issues. William Beatty

Beware: A Policy Paper - Not a Parenting Manual
By A Customer
I read this book expecting to obtain help and information on disciplining and understanding my 2 year old. Instead, the book outlined cleary and forcefully policy points for addressing the various problems facing todays world youth.
While this book (i) makes for interesting "cocktail party" conversation for the casual observer and (ii) provides valid and interesting action plans for those in the legislative, judicial or social work arenas addressing various problems facing children(e.g., custody dispute resolution norms), this book is not a how-to book for parents (like some of Brazelton's other books).
This book should not be bought by those seeking a how-to parenting book. Other more informative books on this subject should be consulted instead. On the other hand, this book should be bought by those engaged in any aspect of work with children.

speaking up for children
By Laurie P. Badley
Gail Hudson's review above words things a little oddly. True, you could argue that this book says children ideally should be in day care less than 30 hours a week, but what it actually says it that ideally, an infant should be at home with a full=time parent! Less than ideal is excellent day care, and it should not happen more than 30 hours a week.
These and other specifics are in this book - how many floor sessions to have with a toddler, how much holding time an infant needs, how many hours of one on one an elementary schooler needs.
This book is marvelous. All parents will find they've fallen short of the ideal, but here's some directions to follow in geting back on track.

Listening to the experts!
By Debra K. New
As a Ph.D. candidate, I read many child development books and this is one that I can get very excited about. Granted, many parents will find the advice hard to swallow, but this is a research based book. In the perfect world, this is how we would raise our children. I think this book is geared more for activists and professionals, but I also believe all parents should be an activist for their child. I wish every senator and congressman were required to read this book. Frankly, I'm grateful to Drs. Brazelton and Greenspan for giving us this opportunity for a glimse into their brillent minds. I would rate this as a must read for anyone concerned about our nation's children and social policies.

Lester, after 13 editions, its' still the best.
By Joe Bova
Lester's "Writing Research Papers" is still the standard reference tool for university students and high school students who have to write research papers. It also provides an excellent rubric for developing and organizing any type of essay, not just research papers. I first encountered this book as an undergraduate in it's fourth edition. I had previously used Coyle and similar books as required resources. Comparatively, Lester wins hand down because it is concise with good examples. Many editions later, in the world of electronic communications, Lester is still relevant as it has been updated to provide an accepted standard for citing electronic reference and Web sources. I have had to purchase three additional copies since my first, one for each of my sons. In fact I really need to get the most recent edition for my own use since my youngest will taking his copy with him when he heads off to college. This is a must have reference tool for any serious student and a good resource for the professional.

Lester & Lester, Jr's Writing Research Papers, 10th Ed.
By steuben
I've written both MLA and APA research papers, and now I teach research writing. THIS IS THE ONE. I use a textbook (usually focusing on Argument/Rhetoric) and Lester's as the reference. It provides a wealth of solid advice, examples, outlines, guides, visuals and Web site addresses. Even though this as an English course, practically none of my students are English majors... so why teach MLA only when they'll have to use APA (social sciences) or CBE (science majors) in the not too distant future? This book addresses that and includes CMS (Humanities, Fine Arts). The appendix is EXCELLENT with the locations of sources for multiple disciplines ranging from Anthropology to Women's Studies.
If your not an English major (and most aren't) and you want to learn research writing from source material to presentation style, this is the reference book.

Wish it was cheaper ):
By EC
I am a High School English teacher who has taught the research paper for 18 years. I have used this Lester book in 5 different editions over the years. I love this work, and think it is the best product out there for students, but the price has become prohibitive. I can no longer ask my students to buy their own copies. I wish there was a version at a more reasonable cost.
