Too much theory

Currently we are undergoing the process of transferring our HR to the HR Business Partnering model and I was looking for more detailed information describing common mistakes made by other companies.

It is nice to read the general theory, but I expected more practical experiences and advice what to do, when things go wrong.

Almost 1/3 of the book is devoted to successful implementation of HRIS, I think that's too much.

About the Author
Lawrence J. Gitman is an emeritus professor of finance at San Diego State University. He received his BA from Purdue University, MBA from the University of Dayton, and PhD from the University of Cincinnati. A prolific author, Dr. Gitman has published more than 50 articles appearing in FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, the FINANCIAL REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL PLANNING, JOURNAL OF RISK AND INSURANCE, FINANCIAL SERVICES REVIEW, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH, FINANCIAL PRACTICE AND EDUCATION, JOURNAL OF FINANCIAL EDUCATION, and other scholarly publications. He has authored and coauthored numerous best-selling textbooks on various finance and business topics as well as investing. An active member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Gitman is past president of the Academy of Financial Services, the San Diego Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Midwest Finance Association, and the FMA National Honor Society. In addition, he is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Dr. Gitman formerly served as a director on the CFP Board of Governors, as vice president of Financial Education for the Financial Management Association, and as director of the San Diego MIT Enterprise Forum. He has two grown children and lives with his wife in La Jolla, California, where he is an avid cyclist.

Takes Financial Theory from a Blackboard to the Real World

This was the textbook for a finance course I'm taking as part of a degree program. I found the book to be very well written and what I liked most was that it used concrete examples to explain the concepts and application of the formulas. The book is not intended to make someone an accountant, but is instead for a manager who needs to understand finances and the underlying theory and practical aspects as tools to make decisions. The authors explain each concept, give examples of the application of the concept, and then provide step-by-step instructions to perform the calculation using either a financial calculator or Microsoft Excel. This is a book I'll keep after class is finished, because I can see myself referring to it in the future.

Love it!

My great grandmother first came here in the 30's and We have been here ever since. The love I have for all things long beach has just been intensified by this book. The only thing wrong with this book is that it's a short read, I could not put it down and was finished really quick. great book, great pictures, great memories.

Informative and wonderfully illustrated

I remember the colorful but long-gone Pike from my early childhood in Long Beach. Having just moved back to the city after many years away, I was very eager to read this book. It's very informative and wonderfully illustrated. I even found a photo of the one ride my parents used to allow me to take – the pony ride at the very edge of the disreputable (to them) but utterly fascinating Pike.

This book was a perfect gift for my mom who grew up in Long Beach, CA in the 30s and 40s. It is filled with fabulous pictures of The Pike. She has loved reliving her childhood and teenage years spent at The Pike in Long Beach.

Facing with the ideas introduced in this book was like an eye opener to me. Even though I have been managing a team of workers for many years, I was not aware of the significant distinction between a manager and a leader, as the author very clearly showcased in this extraordinary book. I do appreciate such approach which emphasises that business world should not all be about performance and results, but also about emotion and people...because, above all, we are human (even managers :) and we all need human approach in order to grow.
I also share the author’s bewilderment - why people, as the most valuable asset of every company, are represented in company books and financial reports as expenditure, and management cars as an asset. Shouldn’t it be other way around?
If his book were “the Bible” for every manager, I believe that this world would be a much better place to work in and, consequently, to live in, because happy workers have much higher chances to become happy people.
My only concern is - will the managers want to read this book when they see the title? :)

Working in HR for many, many years I thought I knew a lot, but to be honest my knowledge was in mess. This book gave structure to my work, it gave structure to my knowledge, it revealed a lot new things to me, and it gave sense to everything.
I have it as a manual for everyday situations and constantly coming back to examples and metaphors from inside. The power of people, love and emotion from this book should become a mandatory tool for managers and/or leaders all over the world.
Ivica did an excellent job, as he always does, and on a very simple, but yet very powerful way explained what do we all need to do in order to feel better, and to create better work environment of happier employees.

Holly Durst was born and raised in a small town in Ohio. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Communication from Walsh University. Holly then moved to Los Angeles where she discovered her love for writing childrens books. Her two favorite things are chocolate and socks. The idea for writing her first book came when Holly was given a gift of a box of chocolate and a pack of socks. The idea is priceless! While living in Los Angeles, Holly managed a high end clothing boutique in Beverly Hills for five years. It was there, where she was spotted and asked to be on ABC's hit show 'The Bachelor.' Three years after her unsuccessful quest for love on television, Holly was asked to come back for season two of 'Bachelor Pad.' This venture was a lot more successful than the last. Bachelor Pad is a competition show competing for love and money. On the show she met Blake Julian, a previous contestant on 'The Bachelorette.' They started dating after the show and by the finale, they were engaged. The engagement wasn't the only big thing to happen to Holly on the show; she won! Holly walked away with $125,000 and the love of her life! Holly currently resides in Greenville, South Carolina. Blake has a dental practice here so she happily moved across the country to be with him. Holly gives all her praise to God for His many blessings in her life.

Amazingly cute kids book, a must buy!

C's Review(She is 6) Chocolate Socks is a awesome book, I want chocolate socks for real and I bet they would be so good. In the book a little girl invented chocolate socks, this book is about doing two different things and combine together to make them real. If I could combine any two things I would combine two of my favorite things which is Lollipops and my Ipod Touch. I could lick it while I listen to it.

Mom's Review- This has got to be one of the cutest children's books I have ever read, and trust me I read a ton of them! This book really has it all, a fun story line that keeps the kids entertained. A great message, one that really resonated with my girls, and the cutest little illustrations. I am not always a fan of rhyming books but in this story it is really the icing on the cake! I've now read this book at least 20 times and it is still just as cute as it was the first round!

Sooo Cute!! Positive Encouragement - Great Story!

This book is well written and beautifully illustrated. It is a joy for adults to read aloud to younger children, but the story is captivating yet easy enough to follow to encourage young readers, as well. The storyline encourages children to "think outside the box" and be creative and persistent in following their dreams. The best part is, the story is so entertaining that the messages are there and absorbed in a very fun way! I purchased this book for a young relative and will be purchasing several more -- this makes a perfect Easter or birthday gift!

Just imagine two things you like best of all things in the world. Put those two things together and what do you have? Well this is what darling little pigtail girl did. She figured out what her two favorite things were and went about creating something fun. It is all in the imagination!

In this book author shows our children that with your imagination you can do great things that are not possible sometimes in real life. But who knows you might even be able to create something from your imagination for real. It has been done before. The illustrations along with the story are bold and bigger than life in fun colors that would inspire any child's creative imagination.

So many children are not encouraged to use their imagination. They are even disciplined and accused of not telling the truth. Let your children use their imagination! I use to encouraged my young grandchildren to make up a story to tell at bedtime or when trying to have a quiet time. They have great imaginations and I loved their stories. Who know your child could become an Author someday.

I highly recommend this book.

Christopher is an authority on programming calculators from Texas Instruments. He writes for the beginners and for the advanced users. I've gotten a lot of interesting and useful knowledge about these wonderful equipment. And also I took ideas for programming the other great family of Texas Instruments, 89s, 92 Plus and Voyage 200.
I really appreciate this purchase because the content is very useful to me and because I got two books for the same price, the printed one and the electronic one. Yes, if you buy the printed book, you get a code to download the ebook from the publisher, for use it permanently.

Peter David turns the Imzadi idea into an epic love story

If telling the back story of William Riker and Deanna Troi was not ambitious enough, David is also audacious enough to work in the Guardian of Forever from the classic original "Star Trek" episode "The City on the Edge of Forever," scripted by Harlan Ellison (and you all know how Ellison felt about what Gene Roddenberry did to the episode, so you can imagine the second thoughts David had to have about picking up on the idea--the volume is dedicated to Harlan). The result is as fine a "Star Trek" novel as you will ever read, with an ending that I still pick up and read from time to time, and which still touches me. David took what ended up being a throw away element from the pilot and turned it into a truly epic love story.
The novel actually begins with the end of "The City on the Edge of Forever," as Captain James T. Kirk says, "Let's get the hell out of here." The event is being observed by several people, including Commander Data. The setting is the future, in which Riker is now an admiral, Wesley Crusher is the Captain of the "Hood," and Lwaxana Troi dies cursing Riker for letting Deanna die many years before. We then go back to the beginning, when young William Riker was assigned to Betazed and found himself intrigued by the tantalizing but completely uninterested Deanna Troi. What follows is one of those rare times that a love story in the "Star Trek" universe reaches a believable level of pathos, which, granted, is hard to do in a television episode.
In addition to the aforementioned challenges of coming up with a compelling story for the Riker-Troi romance and working off of the Ellison episode, David also decides to tell the story of "Imzadi" by jumping around in time from "The End" to "The End of the Beginning" and eventually to "The Beginning of the End." However, this is not a concern because David has worked out the logic of his story and all of the pieces fit together. Besides, if you have any questions, the Guardian of Forever can answer them.
This is probably my favorite "Star Trek" novel. I have a tendency to like stories that connect the dots more than those that try to tell stories that are too big for the small screen (or too expensive for a theatrical film). Even though I had already read the book at the library I went out and bought a copy, in hardcover, and when Marina Sirtis came to the Zenith City for a "Star Trek" convention it was my copy of this book that I had her autograph.

Excellent "voice-acting," well-abridged

Before buying the audio cassette of "Imzadi," I read the book which I absolutely loved. I'd always thought that there was a lot of story potential in the Troi-Riker romance storyline that was never developed in the TV episodes. Listening to the tape (narrated by Jonathan Frakes) was the next best thing -- but that's not to say that it was a "secondbest" effort! Not at all!

The audio tape was great! It has a lot of sound effects which make it easy to imagine the scenes. And Jonathan Frakes for all the jibes he has endured about being a second-rate actor, was incredibly good as narrator and voice for all the characters in the story. (He's got that distinct Deanna Troi accent down pat! And his Jean-Luc was golden!) It's easy to forget that all the voices are being done by one person. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have listened to the tapes several times by now.

Also, as is inevitable with audio versions, the story was abridged, but very cleverly so as to maintain the continuity and tension of the story. In some respects, the audio tape story is stronger for its terseness. I highly recommend this tape!

A Bit Over-Rated, but Good

While I enjoyed Imzadi, it wasn't what I'd call a home run.

Having not even read the backcover of the book when I got it at the resale shop, I was surprised to see most of it set in the future, using a plot structure that actually pre-dated similar stories like All Good Things, Timeless and Endgame. I liked the detail and characterization of all involved, however the flashback made for a very weak middle section.

One can definitely see the prototype for the Calhoun/Shelby relationship in how David depicts the relationship between Riker and Troi. Unfortunately, this sort of screwball comedy romance where the two outwardly hate each other but really love each other is a style I just really can't stand. It results in that kind of aggravating back-and-forth dialogue where each thinks they know what's best and what the other is really feeling. I guess I'm just not the romantic type, but it's something I don't find realistic at all (same goes for the two of them consummating the relationship in the jungle when she was probably malnourished and bloodied and everyone worried about them). And Troi finally developing a backbone with her mom and Will falling conveniently into the arms of another woman felt manipulative and telegraphed where the standard misunderstanding would come in.

I had other problems with the flashback sequence, namely details like how there was one little security team for the entire planet of Betazed and how there apparently isn't any kind of Starfleet vessel assigned to a member world, especially one that's come under harassment from pirates. That just didn't make sense. I imagine a member world coming under attack on a regular basis would bring harsh retaliation from Starfleet.

Thankfully, once the past segment is done, the book picks up again and finds a way to end on just the right note. I also liked the characters attempts to tackle time travel paradoxes that have gone by the wayside in recent televised episodes. Having the future Data become something of the villain was also an interesting twist and David made his near invulnerability fairly menacing. Although the scene of Admiral Riker running around with Data's head followed by his headless body was patently silly. He could have simply given him his head!

Otherwise, a fairly recommendable book. The slower pace was pretty welcome and might appeal to some more than others. The origin story of the Troi/Riker romance rang pretty false with me and it hurts the overall effect since it starts it all off, but again, some might not mind it.
