I recently purchased this book in faith, though I was also frustrated by the lack of information in the book description. So, I will provide here for you the table of contents so that whoever purchases this book from now on can know exactly what they are getting:
(By the way, the book is beautifully new & well designed, with the edges of the pages torn, not cut.)
When it says the complete stories, it means it. The foreword assures that the book contains "all of the fiction that Kafka committed to publication during his lifetime." That meas his novels, which he did NOT intend to be published but left note in his will to be destroyed, are NOT included: The Trial, America, The Castle. I have put his more famous stories in caps.

Excellent presentation of mainline and offbeat Kafka

Excellent and complete collection of well-known Kafka works along with numerous lesser-known works. Kafka's writing is offbeat but very interesting and meaningful. It reminds me in some ways of Hesse in it's early 20th century "Germanness". The print is somewhat small for me, but I am over 60 and still not using reading glasses. I know it's irrelevant, but I find the cover art unappealing - Kafka's name shouldn't be so hard to find on the cover. This isn't a quick read novel, but it's very much worth your time if you like this kind of literature. I do.

My son and I love this book!

My son and I read together at night. He is 8 years old and not all that interested in reading books "just for fun" on his own. But, he doesn't let a night go by without some reading time "together". We loved this book the minute we began. Switching reading turns per page, it was a great book to use character voices and talk about the books "Richard" had to deal with. Fun reading. My daugher, 5, loves it too.

About the Author
Frank White is a magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard College. He attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship, where he earned a Master of Philosophy degree in politics. Mr. White has made me believe not just that it is possible to save the human race, but that the human race is worth saving.

This book had tremendous healing properties for me, and I thank the author for his continued (27 year) effort to convey his message.

Great man, great book

Great man, great book! A must read for all. I came across The Overview Effect a few years ago when trying to figure out what i wanted to explore in my Psychology Doctoral research. I was captivated from the very start and my fascination has only grown since then. The book first came out in the late 80s/90s when the 1st edition was published. Its relevance was not fully understood back then. The ideas in the book are certainly getting more credence and acknowledgement now with space tourism kicking off and space travel providing so much learning - Frank is a forward thinker and someone who will surely be recognized for his philosophies on space travel. i am now in the final year of my doctoral research, and exploring astronaut experiences of the overview effect, and am for ever grateful to the book and the man. Needless to say i am a fan! I love this book, it change my life.

I first read Frank White's, "The Overview Effect" more than 25 years ago when it first came out. The book was an instant classic for those of us who believe space exploration is the most important endeavor of humankind. The book remains a classic today. It was the first humanities based book to illustrate the importance of space exploration. Its basic premise is that a person's outlook on humanity is changed forever once one views the earth from outer space.

I met author Frank White shortly after he wrote the book. I was a graduate student of space business and founder of Students of the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I also was working at NASA's Marshall Spaceflight Center at the time. Now I own Satwest, the worlds leader in providing internet in space. I urge everyone who is a space enthusiast, or who wants the human race to survive and prosper, to read this book.

Garfield is Doris Silbert Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Philosophy at Smith College, Professor in the Graduate Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Massachusetts, Professor of Philosophy at Melbourne University, and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy at the Central University of Tibetan Studies.

Thomas Tymoczko was, until his death, Professor of Philosophy at Smith College. He was editor of New Directions in the Philosophy of Mathematics.

Absolutely wonderful

This is, technically, an edited version of the first edition. However, it is a radical change from the original, fixing all of the first edition's problems. It is always clear, always helpful, and always entertaining. Even if I had missed class and had an assignment to do, all I had to do was read the chapter thoroughly and it made sense. My professors told us that in case they didn't make sense, to simply turn to the book. And it worked. When I was in doubt, this book was my lifeline. I cannot explain how much I love this book.
However, if you are not a person who enjoys being challenged and enjoys having to mull a problem over in your head, you should never take a class that uses this book. This book was designed to encourage logical thinking - which it does. This book (and the course that used it) entirely changed the way I think. I see the world differently now - logically.

This is the required text book of my college so I bought it along with some other logic books. Surprised to see that this one is amazingly good!!!!
It is a combination of traditional symbolic logic and cutting edge topics in the area. I love the style of humor in the book, and the thought-provoking
paradox as well!
Best of its kind~ definitely recommend~!

Apon a certain night - the date of which remains vague-Bram awakens, in a chamber, in a mansion, in the middle of the forest after 100 years. There to greet him is John Pride, a fourth generation lawyer from the firm of Pride, Conrad and Wilson. Unfortunately after all this time there is no longer any Conrads or Wilsons . Bram awakens with apparently little in the way on knowledge of his situation or memories of it. With what little the lawyer is able to impart and the small rectangular box given to him , he must sort out a life for himself. He does have the memory of a poem though, which goes something like.
"An ape, a boar, a stallion,
A land beyond the stars.
A virgin forest, a raging beast,
a prison without bars."

It is a great story rich in details , characters and imagination! One of his best works!

Wrong author, tedious quest tale

First, according to web pages listing his work, the correct author should be: Garrett, Randall & Lesser, Milton as Chase, Adam

E-novella downloaded free from Gutenberg. A being from another planet springs into life on Earth and seeks his destiny, while those who destroyed his nation on his planet worry about someone pursuing revenge.

I could not get into this story at all. I'm not a fan of quests or finding-out-who-you-are stories anyway, and this didn't seem like a particularly good example anyway; the writing and characters all seemed dreadfully self-conscious, and the back-and-forth between Earth and the other planet and characters felt disjointed. Garrett has written some excellent stories; read them and skip this one.

I originally read this book as a teenager shortly after it was first published. It was a fun read 50 years ago and it was a fun read now. This is definitely a teenager's book, but if you've got a few hours you'd like to pass enjoyably, this book will fill the bill.

An old fan

Great price, interesting book. I remember watching Ruby Wax on British TV when I was stationed there in the 80's with the USAF. She was traveling the world, interfacing with different people & cultures. I seem to remember saying that she was recently married and had moved to England. Terrific show, she was brilliant! But, I cannot find episodes anywhere on the internet, suspect the BBC didn't save them, or haven't released them. Her later work interviewing celebrities is on YouTube, still good, but the original show was true Ruby.

Ruby is a Gem!

I was interested in the other reviews of this book--and surprised at their lukewarm and even hostile attitudes. It would seem you either like Ruby Wax's wild and outrageous sense of humor or you don't. And if you're American, which I am, you might take offense at some of her well thought-out potshots at the USA, but only if you takes things so personally that you can't laugh at your own country. In which case, steer clear of Ruby.

I read this book in one sitting--it was something I regretted ending. There are passages that are so funny (like her excursion to Disneyland) that I was in physical pain from laughing so much. There are also sadder passages recounting the loss and difficulty she went through in coming to terms with the abusive upbringing she had at the hands of her eccentric but mad parents. What comes through is that she came through all of it, on a different continent, fulfilling her dreams to act (despite all the ugly things her parents told her about her lack of talent). For that reason this book is ultimately uplifting and positive. It is a sometimes raucously funny account of one very talented person's survival at the hands of utterly insane parents. Well done!

And in regards to Girls on Top, I think it is fantastic--not the same as AbFab, but quite spot on. I cross my fingers that we will see more of Ruby in the future.
